We have a bailout by the people, for the

We have a bailout by the people, for the people, coming up November 15th called the Rolling Jubilee. This is a project of the OWS affinity group Strike Debt where we buy debt for pennies on the dollar, but instead of collecting it, we abolish it.  The banks got bailed out. We got sold out. The 1% won’t sponsor a #PeoplesBailout. But we are the bailout we’ve been waiting for. Join us.

We cannot buy specific individuals’ debt – instead, we help liberate debtors at random through a campaign of mutual support, good will, and collective refusal. The Jubilee begins November 15
with a variety show and telethon in NYC.
All proceeds will go directly to buying people’s debt and cancelling it.

The banks got bailed out. We got sold out. The 1% won’t sponsor a #PeoplesBailout. But we are the bailout we’ve been waiting for. Join us.

    Can you please elaborate!

Sorry, Anthony. I added the missing links to the post above.

Thanks, but why even pay back the debt, or rather buy the debt at pennies on the dollars from the bank (essentially giving them even more money than what was given to them in the bailout)?

Sorry, I don’t know enough about this project yet to answer that. PR

That’s fine. It seems quite redundant to me at first glance, to ship over even more money to the ones who were bailed out, if that is the case.

I agree that it seems a shame to feed more money to the banks this way, but I assume it is the only way at this point to actually get some consumers (debtors) off the hook for their current debt emergencies. Some consumers can walk away from certain kinds of debts with relatively few negative repercussions. Not so for many student loan consumers, for example, for whom something like this Rolling Jubilee may be about the only clean way out.
